A Quick Guide to Hong Kong: Ice Cream

Hong Kong is a destination where you'd never be lacking in amazing food, drinks, shopping, sightseeing, culture, and basically anything you'd ever want under the sun. A "quick guide" to Hong Kong is impossible as the city is inexhaustible. I lived there for part of my life and have visited annually for the past decade, and each time I feel like I'm only scraping the tip of the iceberg. Therefore, I'm just going to compose a quick guide to the ice cream in Hong Kong for this edition.

1. Little Bao (Central)
Deep fried bao with green tea ice cream and condensed milk. While Little Bao has delicious cocktails and a solid dinner menu, this dessert is really the star!

2. Lab Made (Tsim Sha Tsui)
Hong Kong's specialty egg custard buns ice cream, instantly made by liquid nitrogen. The texture is so smooth and rich, and plus, watching the process is interesting!

3. Softree (Causeway Bay)
This is an ice cream chain in Korea but my first time trying it. Left: honeycomb milk ice cream - I love honey and the organic milk ice cream is a flavorful complement. Right: caramel cookie crumb ice cream - fine crumb texture paired nicely with the buttery ice cream.

4. I Cremeria (Causeway Bay)
I wanted to try Via Tokyo but it was closed, so I came to I Cremeria. Green tea anything is amazing. The green tea ice cream is soft and creamy and comes with delicious mochi and red bean.

5. Oddies Foodies (Wan Chai)
Left: Night Wolf - chocolate chip egglet waffle with chocolate and milk ice cream, passionfruit panna cotta, and cookie crumbs. Right: Dr. Oddies - chrysanthemum poached pears, ginger oat crumbs, honey ginger ice cream, honey jelly, butter crumbs, and a citrus caramel sauce syringe. These creative, novelty desserts are fun and definitely worth a try!

If you have additional questions about the city, feel free to ask me in the comments! Check out my other quick guides: Las Vegas and Maui.

  2. Wow - I lived in Hong Kong for two years and never tried anything like any of these. I usually just went to XTC Gelato for my fix. (Of course, some of these places could be new, I lived there about three years ago.)
